Why do firms enter an industry? Why do some firms survive in an industry while others decline? Entry and exit are crucial elements of market selection process, and play an important role in the restructuring, adaptation and evolution of an industry. This paper analyses the entry and exit dynamics of Turkish manufacturing industry for the period 1981-1997. It focuses on the determinants of entry and exit, and the sectoral variation within the industry. It also uses a dynamic panel data estimation procedure to investigate the relationship between entry and exit.
The paper makes the following findings:
profit margin positively affects entry rate, while there is a negative correlation between exit and profit margin. This is reasonable because profit margin includes costs that can be thought as entry barriers
capital intensity, which represents an entry barrier in the model, seems to be negatively and significantly related to the entry rate while it shows a positive correlation with the exit rate
there is a positive relationship between growth and entry which implies that high growth rates in the industry attract new entrants. On the other hand, the relationship between exit and growth rate is strong and negative
the concentration ratio is an important determinant of both entry and exit
